Introduction
Lying on the left side and experiencing shortness of breath may be caused by conditions such as upper airway soft tissue prolapse, deviated nasal septum, or tuberculous pleurisy. If the soft tissues of the upper airway prolapse, they may obstruct the airway when lying on the left side, leading to difficulty breathing. Besides these causes, it could also be related to conditions like pneumothorax. It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation, obtain an accurate diagnosis, and then proceed with appropriate treatment.

Difficulty breathing when lying on the left side may be caused by conditions such as upper airway soft tissue prolapse, deviated nasal septum, or tuberculous pleurisy.

1. Upper Airway Soft Tissue Prolapse

If the soft tissues of the upper airway prolapse, they may obstruct the airway when lying on the left side, leading to symptoms of breathing difficulty. Appropriate local massage may help alleviate symptoms.

2. Deviated Nasal Septum

A deviated nasal septum can result from nasal trauma or congenital cartilage maldevelopment. If the septum is deviated to the left, the left nasal passage naturally has poorer airflow, and lying on the left side can worsen this, causing a sensation of breathlessness. A septoplasty procedure at a reputable hospital can help correct this condition.

3. Tuberculous Pleurisy

When Mycobacterium tuberculosis infects the pleura, it triggers local inflammatory reactions that may lead to pleural effusion, resulting in chest tightness and breathing difficulties. Under medical guidance, anti-tuberculosis medications such as isoniazid tablets or ethambutol capsules can be used for treatment. In some cases, needle aspiration of the fluid may be necessary to reduce lung compression.

Besides the above causes, this symptom may also be related to conditions like pneumothorax. Patients are advised to seek timely medical evaluation to establish an accurate diagnosis before initiating treatment.
