What causes dryness, cracking, and peeling of the skin on the palms?
Dry, cracked, and peeling palms may result from normal physiological factors, or could be caused by conditions such as eczema or hand fungus. A detailed analysis is as follows:
I. Physiological Causes
If the hands are exposed to extremely dry weather for prolonged periods or if fluid intake is relatively low, it may lead to dry skin, causing cracking and peeling of the palms. This can be improved by applying moisturizing creams.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Eczema
Prolonged contact with physical or chemical irritants may trigger inflammation in the superficial dermis and epidermis, leading to symptoms such as fissures and scaling on the hands. Treatment may include topical medications such as pimecrolimus cream or desonide cream, used according to medical advice.
2. Hand Fungus (Tinea Manuum)
This condition is caused by a fungal infection of the skin on the hands. It commonly presents with distinct redness and flaking on the palms. As the disease progresses, the entire palm may become dry, cracked, and rough. Treatment may include antifungal creams such as compound clotrimazole cream or amorolfine hydrochloride cream, used as directed by a physician.
In addition to the above common causes, other conditions such as palmoplantar keratoderma may also be responsible. If discomfort occurs, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
