Differences between scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis
Scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis are relatively common conditions in dermatology. These two diseases differ in several aspects, including their causes, affected areas, and presenting symptoms. The specific differences are as follows:
1. Causes
Scalp psoriasis may be triggered by genetic factors, infections, or psychological stress. Among these, genetic factors play a significant role in the development of psoriasis, although it does not always show a clear familial inheritance pattern. The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis remains unclear, but it is mostly associated with excessive sebum production.
2. Affected Areas
Psoriasis can occur not only on the scalp but also on various other parts of the skin throughout the body, such as the trunk and extensor surfaces of the limbs. In contrast, seborrheic dermatitis typically develops in areas rich in sebaceous glands, including the scalp, face, upper chest, and genital region.
3. Symptoms
Scalp psoriasis presents with red plaques on the scalp covered by thick, white scales. Seborrheic dermatitis manifests as increased dandruff, an oily sensation, and follicular papules.
In addition to the above distinctions, these two conditions can also be differentiated based on lesion characteristics and treatment approaches.
