What tests should be done to check if the IUD has fallen out?
To check whether an intrauterine device (IUD) has fallen out, you can undergo X-ray examination, transvaginal ultrasound, or hysteroscopy. The details are as follows:
1. X-ray Examination
An IUD is a common contraceptive device with various shapes, primarily placed within the uterine cavity to prevent pregnancy. X-ray examination uses X-rays generated by a machine, which pass through tissues of different densities, allowing assessment of local physiological changes. Because IUDs have high density, their position can be clearly observed using X-ray imaging.
2. Transvaginal Ultrasound
Transvaginal ultrasound involves using a specialized probe to examine the appearance of the vagina and cervix. During the procedure, a vaginal speculum is used along with bimanual examination. If the IUD has dislodged into the cervical area, this examination can detect it.
3. Hysteroscopy
Prior to this examination, the patient receives local anesthesia. A hysteroscope is then inserted into the uterine cavity, enabling visualization of the uterine interior from specific angles. Since the hysteroscope provides direct visual access, it allows accurate observation of the IUD's position.
It is recommended that after IUD insertion, patients avoid strenuous activities in the short term, maintain good personal hygiene, and wear cotton underwear. If abnormal bleeding occurs, prompt medical consultation at a hospital is advised.
