What does darkening of the face indicate?
Generally speaking, facial darkening is not a sign of any serious condition and may be caused by factors such as changes in environmental temperature, malnutrition, intake of vitamin E or lemon water, liver abnormalities, or blood stasis due to cold. Patients are advised to follow medical advice for symptomatic treatment. Specific analysis is as follows:
1. Changes in environmental temperature
Moving from a warm indoor environment to a cold outdoor one, sudden drops in temperature due to seasonal changes, or traveling from warmer to colder regions may cause the face to appear darker. This is a normal physiological response that usually improves with proper warmth and gradually returns to normal; there is no need for concern.
2. Malnutrition
When suffering from malnutrition, the skin tends to become dry and atrophic, forming a keratinized layer, often accompanied by flaking. Pigmentation easily accumulates, leading to facial darkening, while hair becomes brittle, prone to shedding or breakage. Nutritional supplementation should primarily focus on protein intake—such as milk, goat's milk, soy milk, fish powder, minced meat, and liver paste—and should also include appropriate amounts of fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins. Additionally, engaging in daily aerobic exercise is recommended.
3. Intake of vitamin E or drinking lemon water
Women may take vitamin E or drink lemon water for anti-aging or skin whitening purposes. However, these practices can increase the skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays, making it more likely to tan or darken when exposed to sunlight during the day. Therefore, it is recommended to consume these in the evening.
4. Liver abnormalities
When liver function is impaired, hormonal metabolism becomes abnormal and melanin production increases, resulting in a dark, dull, dry, and rough complexion. Some individuals may also develop dilated capillaries on the face or nasal tip. Treatment may include medications such as Adefovir Dipivoxil Tablets or Tenofovir Alafenamide Fumarate Tablets, as prescribed by a physician.
5. Blood stasis due to cold
Facial darkening refers to the appearance of blackish discoloration across the entire face or in localized areas, often associated with blood stasis caused by cold. This condition may also present with general feelings of coldness throughout the body. Treatment under medical guidance may include medications such as Compound Danshen Dripping Pills or Xuefu Zhuyu Pills.
Patients are advised to seek timely medical attention when experiencing discomfort and to undergo standardized treatment under the guidance of a healthcare professional, which helps promote recovery.
