How to locate the gluteus maximus, gluteus minimus, and gluteus medius
In general, the gluteus maximus is located in the superficial layer of the buttock muscles, on the posterolateral side of the hip joint, and has a fan-like shape; the gluteus minimus lies in the superficial part of the buttock, square-shaped, covering the posterior portion of the gluteus medius and other gluteal muscles; the gluteus medius is situated inferomedially in the buttock, between the gluteus maximus and the pelvic bone.
Localization methods:
Name |
Gluteus Maximus |
Gluteus Minimus |
Gluteus Medius |
Location |
Superficial layer of the buttock muscles, posterolateral to the hip joint, fan-shaped |
Superficial part of the buttock, square-shaped, covering the posterior portion of the gluteus medius and other gluteal muscles |
Inferomedial aspect of the buttock, between the gluteus maximus and the pelvic bone |
Function |
Abducts the thigh when the body is stationary and stabilized |
Stabilizes the lower limb and pelvis, reducing load on the ischium |
Abducts and externally rotates the hip joint |
Method |
Locate the iliac wing; trace from the outer surface of the iliac wing to the iliotibial tract and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur |
From the level of the second rib below the iliac crest down to above the greater trochanter of the femur |
From the third rib below the iliac crest to the bony tubercle |
If discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
