Introduction
Lung cancer may also cause shoulder pain; however, shoulder pain is not necessarily a symptom of lung cancer. There are numerous other potential causes of shoulder pain, including periarthritis of the shoulder, trauma, overuse injuries, and other pulmonary conditions. In cases of lung cancer, shoulder pain may occur due to tumor-related pain that radiates to the shoulder.

People often experience various abnormal symptoms, such as shoulder pain or soreness. Since numerous factors may cause this discomfort, it warrants our attention. So, is shoulder pain a symptom of lung cancer? Below, we provide clarification.

Is shoulder pain a symptom of lung cancer?

Shoulder pain can occasionally occur in patients with lung cancer, but shoulder pain alone does not necessarily indicate lung cancer. Many other conditions—including shoulder periarthritis (frozen shoulder), trauma, overuse injuries, and other pulmonary diseases—can also cause shoulder pain. In lung cancer, shoulder pain may arise from tumor-related nerve irritation, leading to referred (radiating) pain to the shoulder region. To determine whether shoulder pain stems from lung cancer or another underlying cause, diagnostic tests such as chest CT, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, and biopsy are recommended for definitive diagnosis. Shoulder pain is always an abnormal sign, indicating potential health problems that may significantly impact overall well-being. For safety and accuracy, prompt medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital are strongly advised.

Knowledge Extension: How to Relieve Shoulder Pain

1. Circular Massage of the Shoulder Region

Sit still and place your left palm on your right shoulder. Gently massage the shoulder area in circular motions 50–100 times until warmth develops between your hand and shoulder. Repeat the same procedure using your right hand on your left shoulder, performing 50–100 rotations each time. This exercise should be performed daily.

2. Head-Pressing Palm Technique

This technique is best performed before bedtime and upon waking. Lie supine on your bed with legs relaxed and slightly apart. Place your palms beneath your head, palms facing upward and backs of hands facing downward. Gently press your head downward onto the center of whichever palm feels more tender or painful. Maintain this pressure for approximately 20 minutes per session.
