Introduction
The choice of abortion method depends on individual circumstances. For medical abortion, ultrasound confirmation is required between 5–7 weeks of gestation. For surgical abortion (vacuum aspiration), the optimal timing is within 10 weeks of gestation. Between approximately 10–13 weeks of gestation, dilation and curettage (D&C) may be performed. Beyond this gestational age, induction of labor may be necessary.

In general, if pregnancy is unintended, the earlier the decision is made to terminate it, the less harm it will cause to your body. However, the choice between medical abortion and surgical abortion depends on individual circumstances. For medical abortion, ultrasound confirmation of pregnancy between 5–7 weeks’ gestation is required before proceeding with medication-induced termination. Prior to this, routine blood tests, coagulation function tests, and vaginal discharge examinations must be performed.

For surgical abortion, in addition to the above pre-abortion tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG) is also required to assess cardiac function. Generally, the optimal timing for surgical abortion is within 10 weeks of gestation.

The earlier a painless surgical abortion is performed, the simpler and safer the procedure tends to be, and the faster the postoperative recovery. Conversely, delaying the procedure increases its complexity and prolongs recovery time. Within the first 10 weeks of gestation, the uterus remains relatively small, and the fetus and placenta have not yet fully developed; cervical dilation is typically unnecessary, and evacuation of the gestational tissue is straightforward via suction aspiration. Patients usually experience minimal intraoperative discomfort, little bleeding, and a short operative time. After resting for 1–2 hours post-procedure, patients may return home and recover rapidly, with minimal impact on overall health. If gestation reaches approximately 10–13 weeks, dilation and curettage (D&C) may be used. For pregnancies beyond this stage, induction of labor may be necessary.
