Introduction
Coughing, nausea, and dry heaving often indicate pharyngitis. Pharyngeal inflammation is commonly caused by viral or bacterial infections, leading to pharyngeal hyperemia and edema, accompanied by redness, swelling, heat, and pain. Additionally, copious inflammatory exudates are produced, all of which can irritate the pharynx and trigger coughing.

Coughing, nausea, and dry retching commonly occur in pharyngitis. Pharyngeal inflammation is typically caused by viral or bacterial infection, leading to pharyngeal hyperemia and edema, accompanied by redness, swelling, heat, and pain. Additionally, copious inflammatory exudates are produced, which irritate the pharynx and thereby trigger coughing.

The pharynx serves as a shared passageway for both the respiratory and digestive systems. Thus, besides causing respiratory symptoms such as coughing, pharyngeal inflammation may also induce gastrointestinal symptoms—including nausea and dry retching—particularly when the pharynx is irritated.

Anti-inflammatory treatment at this stage is usually effective. We recommend oral administration of Pudilan Anti-inflammatory Oral Liquid or Lanqin Oral Liquid. If symptoms fail to improve, antibiotic therapy may be necessary—suggesting possible secondary bacterial infection—and oral administration of cefixime or cefradine is advised.
