Introduction
1. Urinary tract infection (UTI), often accompanied by cloudy urine, urinary frequency, urgency, and dysuria (painful urination). 2. Prostatitis, commonly characterized by foul-smelling urine; patients with prostatitis may experience pain during urination. 3. Liver or kidney disease: Hepatic injury impairs liver function—for instance, in hepatitis patients, toxins and metabolic waste cannot be effectively eliminated.

Under normal circumstances, urine is transparent or pale yellow and odorless. However, yellowish urine warrants attention—especially if it occurs persistently. Several factors may contribute to chronically yellow urine. Common causes include urinary tract infections (UTIs) and liver or kidney disorders. When such changes occur, prompt medical evaluation is essential to establish an accurate diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment. So, what are the possible reasons for persistently yellow urine? Below, we address this question.

Causes of Persistently Yellow Urine

1. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

UTIs often present with cloudy urine, increased urinary frequency and urgency, and painful urination (dysuria). To confirm the diagnosis and prevent disease progression, patients should seek medical evaluation—including urinalysis and urine culture. Additionally, urine contains a natural yellow pigment called urochrome. When fluid intake is insufficient, urine becomes concentrated, increasing the relative concentration of urochrome and resulting in darker yellow urine. Therefore, maintaining adequate daily hydration and regular urination is crucial.

2. Prostatitis

Prostatitis commonly causes foul-smelling urine and painful urination. Similarly, urethritis—often caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, or Mycoplasma species—can also lead to yellowish urine and is among the known infectious causes of male infertility. Furthermore, excessive consumption of foods rich in carotenoids—such as carrots and papaya—may cause urine to appear deep yellow due to the excretion of pigment metabolites.

3. Liver or Kidney Disorders

Liver damage impairs hepatic function. In hepatitis patients, delayed clearance of toxins and metabolic waste products can result in markedly dark, tea-colored urine. Likewise, impaired renal function may hinder the metabolism and excretion of bilirubin, leading to yellowish urine—a change that may persist over time. Moreover, during febrile illness or diarrhea, excessive water loss through sweat or stool leads to urine concentration and consequent darkening.

The above outlines the primary causes of persistently yellow urine. We hope this information is helpful to you.
