Introduction
There are various classification methods for shock, but two are commonly used in clinical practice: 1. Classification by etiology: includes hemorrhagic shock, burn shock, traumatic shock, septic shock, anaphylactic shock, cardiogenic shock, and neurogenic shock. 2. Classification by the initiating mechanism of shock: includes hypovolemic shock, distributive shock, and cardiogenic shock.

There are numerous classification systems for shock; however, two are most commonly used in clinical practice:

1. Classification by etiology: This includes hypovolemic (hemorrhagic) shock, burn shock, traumatic shock, septic shock, anaphylactic shock, cardiogenic shock, and neurogenic shock. This classification facilitates prompt identification of the underlying cause and guides targeted interventions; thus, it is widely adopted in clinical settings.

2. Classification by the initiating pathophysiological mechanism: This includes hypovolemic shock, distributive shock, and cardiogenic shock. Hypovolemic shock results from reduced intravascular volume and encompasses hemorrhagic shock, burn shock, and traumatic shock.

Distributive shock—also termed vasogenic shock—is characterized by abnormal blood distribution, with excessive pooling of blood in peripheral vessels, leading to decreased effective circulating blood volume and subsequent tissue ischemia. It includes septic shock, anaphylactic shock, and neurogenic shock. Integrating these two classification approaches enhances clinical diagnosis and management of shock.
