What does “negative hepatitis B virus surface antibody” mean?
A negative hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) test result indicates the absence of detectable hepatitis B surface antibodies in the body. Further clinical interpretation requires comprehensive analysis alongside other hepatitis B serological markers, including hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc), hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg), and hepatitis B e-antibody (anti-HBe).
If HBsAg is positive, the individual is an active hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier or infected person and requires regular follow-up monitoring. If HBsAg and all other hepatitis B serological markers are negative, this suggests neither current HBV infection nor prior immunity (i.e., no anti-HBs). In such cases, hepatitis B vaccination is recommended to induce protective anti-HBs production and thereby prevent HBV infection.
