How long does it take to cure vulvovaginal candidiasis?
Candidal vaginitis is a common gynecological vaginal inflammation and is classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Therefore, it is closely associated with unhygienic sexual practices, inadequate personal hygiene, and compromised host immunity—factors that predispose individuals to recurrent infections.

Pregnant and postpartum women frequently inquire about recurrent candidal vaginitis during outpatient visits. Indeed, this condition can spread both directly and indirectly. Direct transmission commonly occurs between sexual partners—for instance, from male to female or vice versa—resulting in cross-infection and thus increasing the likelihood of recurrence.
Indirect transmission may occur via shared utensils or personal items, facilitating mutual pathogen spread. Clinically, patients typically present with abnormal vaginal discharge. A hallmark symptom—especially among pregnant women and non-pregnant females—is “cottage cheese–like” vaginal discharge. During outpatient evaluation, microscopic examination of vaginal secretions often reveals fungal hyphae and spores, enabling definitive diagnosis of candidal vaginitis. Treatment primarily involves topical intravaginal antifungal therapy.
In most cases, the majority of patients experience normalization of routine vaginal discharge tests within one to two weeks. However, upon returning home, strict adherence to lifestyle modifications is essential. Both partners must undergo treatment simultaneously; additionally, thorough disinfection of undergarments and personal items is critically important. Neglecting these measures significantly increases the risk of relapse—even after successful initial treatment, recurrence may occur shortly thereafter.

Pregnant women naturally experience increased vaginal discharge and secretions; therefore, extra attention should be paid to frequent washing, prompt changing, and proper disinfection of undergarments, as well as maintaining rigorous personal hygiene. Male partners should also observe these precautions carefully to prevent cross-infection.
