Introduction
Normal semen is milky white or pale yellow in color. A pale yellow hue may occur after a prolonged period without ejaculation, resulting in slight color changes and increased viscosity—this is considered normal. However, if a male has inflammation of the genitourinary tract, the semen may also appear yellow; under microscopic examination, numerous pus cells (leukocytes) are observed, most likely indicating suppurative infection of the prostate and/or seminal vesicles.

Semen consists of spermatozoa (sperm) and seminal plasma. Sperm constitute only a tiny fraction of semen volume, while over 90% is seminal plasma. Sperm are fundamental to human reproduction; fertilization occurs when sperm fuse with an egg to form a zygote, enabling subsequent pregnancy. So, what color and appearance does healthy sperm have? The following section addresses this question.

What Color and Appearance Does Healthy Sperm Have?

Normal semen appears milky white or pale yellow. A pale-yellow hue may occur after prolonged abstinence from ejaculation, resulting in slightly thicker, more viscous semen—a normal physiological variation. However, if the male reproductive tract is inflamed, semen may also appear yellow; microscopic examination may reveal numerous pus cells, often indicating purulent infection of the prostate or seminal vesicles. Normal semen is odorless. After ejaculation, exposure to air triggers oxidation, producing a faint, chestnut-blossom-like scent. Any foul or unusual odor strongly suggests underlying pathology, warranting prompt medical evaluation and treatment.

Knowledge Extension: How to Improve Sperm Quality

1. Maintain a Balanced Diet

A nutritious, well-balanced diet—particularly rich in vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, and eggs—greatly benefits sperm health. Foods high in zinc (e.g., oysters) are especially crucial for enhancing sperm quality.

2. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking harms both general health and sperm quality. Moreover, secondhand smoke exposure can adversely affect a partner’s fertility. Alcohol consumption leads to abnormal morphology in up to 70% of sperm; even if conception occurs, it may increase risks of fetal developmental abnormalities.

The above outlines the typical color and appearance of healthy sperm. We hope this information proves helpful.
