Numerous common diseases occur in daily life, among which nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is highly prevalent. As its name suggests, NPC is a malignant tumor arising from the roof and lateral walls of the nasopharyngeal cavity. It is a highly lethal malignancy; once diagnosed, it poses significant health risks to patients. Therefore, early detection and prompt treatment are essential. What Are the Symptoms of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma?
1. Epistaxis (Nosebleeds)
Unexplained epistaxis—occurring without trauma—should raise clinical suspicion. Approximately 30% of NPC patients experience nosebleeds, particularly upon waking in the morning. These must be differentiated from epistaxis caused by rhinitis or sinusitis. Sudden, profuse epistaxis warrants immediate referral for histopathological examination.
2. Headache
Headache is a common early symptom of NPC. In clinical practice, many patients are first diagnosed with NPC after presenting with headache. This headache typically manifests as unilateral (side-specific) pain, or pain localized to the vertex, occiput, or posterior neck region. Such pain arises primarily from tumor invasion of the skull base bone, cranial nerves, and adjacent blood vessels.
3. Lymphadenopathy
Early-stage NPC often presents with cervical lymphadenopathy. Patients may detect a firm, painless, progressively enlarging mass in the neck during the initial phase of disease. Without timely intervention, the condition will inevitably worsen.
4. Hearing Loss
Tinnitus and progressive hearing loss are also common early signs of NPC. These symptoms result primarily from tumor obstruction of the pharyngeal orifice of the auditory (Eustachian) tube. Once hearing impairment becomes evident, it indicates that the auditory nerve has already sustained damage. Delayed treatment will only accelerate disease progression.
