Introduction
Under normal circumstances, sperm survival time varies depending on the environment. For motile sperm in a 37°C environment, viability lasts more than 4–8 hours. In the vagina, sperm survive for approximately 0.5 days; in the cervix, survival time ranges from 2 to 8 days; and in the uterus and fallopian tubes, sperm also remain viable.

Generally speaking, higher sperm viability in men typically indicates better sperm quality. Moreover, male fertility is directly proportional to sperm quality and quantity. The duration of sperm survival after ejaculation also influences the likelihood of conception. However, some sperm have relatively short post-ejaculation survival times—fertility potential declines within 48 hours. So, how long do sperm survive after ejaculation? Below, we address this question.

How Long Do Sperm Survive After Ejaculation?

Under different environmental conditions, sperm survival time varies significantly. For motile sperm maintained at 37°C, viability typically lasts 4–8 hours or longer. Within the vagina, sperm generally survive for approximately 0.5 days; in the cervix, survival ranges from 2 to 8 days; and in the uterus and fallopian tubes, sperm remain viable for about 2–2.5 days. Additionally, lowering the temperature can extend sperm survival to several weeks. When cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen, sperm may remain viable indefinitely. Thus, environmental conditions profoundly affect sperm longevity.

Additional Information: Key Considerations for Assessing Sperm Viability

1. Prior to testing, abstinence for 48 hours is recommended—but not exceeding one week. For first-time evaluations, two semen analyses are advised. To ensure result accuracy, the interval between the two semen collections should be no less than 7 days and no more than three weeks. Semen should be collected via masturbation and deposited into a specially designed, non-toxic condom.

2. Specimens must be delivered to the laboratory within one hour of collection. Ideally, collection should occur in a designated on-site facility at the hospital. The collection environment should be maintained at approximately 20°C. Prior to collection, the individual should urinate and thoroughly wash both hands and the genital area. During transport to the lab, the specimen temperature must remain above 20°C but not exceed 40°C to prevent analytical error.

The above outlines sperm survival duration following ejaculation. We hope this information is helpful to you.
