This technique is based on the Doppler effect principle: when there is relative motion between the sound source and the reflector (e.g., moving blood cells), the frequency of the reflected echo changes; this frequency shift is used to visualize and assess blood flow.

Color Doppler ultrasound is widely used in daily clinical practice and is a common diagnostic tool for various diseases. Pregnant women typically undergo four-dimensional (4D) color ultrasound to screen for fetal structural abnormalities.

Is Color Doppler Ultrasound the Same as 4D Ultrasound?

Color Doppler ultrasound is a type of color ultrasound examination, which encompasses conventional two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D), and four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound techniques. This method relies on the Doppler effect—specifically, the change in frequency of reflected sound waves caused by relative motion between the sound source and the moving reflector (e.g., blood cells)—to visualize and assess blood flow.

It provides excellent diagnostic capability for evaluating abdominal and superficial organs, peripheral vascular structures, the heart, and gynecological conditions. While both 2D and 3D ultrasound produce static images, 4D ultrasound generates real-time, dynamic volumetric images—making it especially valuable for detailed and accurate fetal anomaly screening during pregnancy.

The optimal time for performing a 4D color ultrasound is generally between 22 and 28 weeks of gestation. During this period, fetal organ development is more complete, and amniotic fluid volume is abundant, providing ample space for fetal movement—ideal conditions for comprehensive fetal anomaly screening. Additionally, 4D ultrasound enables “in-utero photo sessions,” capturing dynamic images of fetal organ movements and facial expressions to create cherished keepsake photo albums.

Pregnant women should avoid fasting before undergoing a 4D color ultrasound. An empty stomach may lead to reduced maternal blood glucose levels, resulting in decreased fetal movement—which can directly compromise the quality and accuracy of the examination.
