Introduction
Patients with hyperthyroidism are also prone to indigestion. This is because hyperthyroidism increases the body’s overall metabolic rate, which in turn accelerates gastrointestinal motility. As a result, digestion and absorption of food become incomplete, leading to frequent symptoms of indigestion—often accompanied by diarrhea.

Hyperthyroidism—commonly referred to as “hyperthyroid disease”—is a condition caused by excessive synthesis and release of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, leading to heightened metabolic activity and sympathetic nervous system overstimulation. This results in symptoms such as palpitations, excessive sweating, increased appetite and bowel movements, and unintended weight loss. Additionally, many patients also experience exophthalmos (protruding eyes), eyelid edema, and diminished vision. So, does hyperthyroidism cause indigestion? Below, we address this question.

Does Hyperthyroidism Cause Indigestion?

Patients with hyperthyroidism are highly prone to indigestion. Because hyperthyroidism accelerates the body’s overall metabolic rate, gastrointestinal motility also increases, impairing complete digestion and absorption of food. Consequently, indigestion is common—and often accompanied by diarrhea.

If indigestion occurs alongside hyperthyroidism, lifestyle and dietary modifications are recommended. First, consume simple, bland, easily digestible foods—for example, rice porridge, millet porridge, rice gruel, or wheat flour gruel. Avoid high-fiber foods, as they may further accelerate gastrointestinal motility and exacerbate diarrhea. Fried, spicy, or otherwise strongly irritating foods should also be avoided.

Over-the-counter traditional Chinese patent medicines may also help alleviate indigestion—for instance, Wushicha Granules, Jianweixiaoshi Tablets, Qixingcha Granules, or Dashanzha Granules—all of which are effective for improving indigestion and generally well tolerated with minimal side effects.

The above outlines whether hyperthyroidism can cause indigestion. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
