What to Do for Sudden Fever

Introduction
If rapid fever develops, it is essential to promptly identify the underlying cause and initiate targeted treatment. For low-grade fevers with a clearly identified cause, in addition to treating the underlying condition, physical cooling methods may be employed to reduce fever. Certain traditional Chinese patent medicines may also assist in fever reduction—for example, oral administration of Saiga Antelope Horn Granules.

The term “fever” commonly refers to an elevation of body temperature above the normal range. A temperature reaching 40°C (104°F) indicates a severe fever. Besides high-grade fever, low-grade fever—where body temperature falls below the normal range—also occurs. The most common cause of fever is the common cold; however, pulmonary disorders and early-stage lymphoma may also trigger fever.

What to Do for Sudden Onset of Fever

When sudden-onset fever occurs, it is essential to promptly identify its underlying cause and initiate targeted treatment. For mild, low-grade fevers with a clearly identified etiology, in addition to treating the root cause, physical cooling methods (e.g., tepid sponging, cool compresses) may be employed to reduce fever. Over-the-counter traditional Chinese patent medicines—such as Saiga Antelope Horn Granules—may also be used orally to help alleviate fever.

In cases of high-grade fever, antipyretic medications should be administered immediately—for example, ibuprofen suspension or acetaminophen (paracetamol) suspension—which are generally effective at reducing fever. If high fever recurs, the same medication may be repeated every 4–6 hours, up to a maximum of four doses per day. However, prior medical consultation and prescription remain mandatory before initiating any drug therapy.

For unexplained low-grade fever, immediate antipyretic treatment is not advised; instead, active investigation into the underlying cause is warranted. Indiscriminate use of antipyretics may compromise immune function. Conversely, prompt fever reduction remains critical in cases of high-grade fever to prevent complications such as febrile seizures.

The above outlines key considerations for managing sudden-onset fever. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
