Gallbladder polyps—also termed “gallbladder protruding lesions”—are abnormalities occurring in the gallbladder wall, characterized by polypoid protrusions extending from the gallbladder wall into the gallbladder lumen. Gallbladder polyps may be either benign or malignant; however, benign lesions are far more common clinically. Benign gallbladder polyps can be further classified into several types, including inflammatory polyps, adenomyomatous polyps, adenomatous polyps, cholesterol polyps, and heterotopic tissue polyps.

What Are the Symptoms of Gallbladder Polyps?

1. Most patients with gallbladder polyps remain asymptomatic; these individuals typically discover the condition incidentally during routine physical examinations, particularly via abdominal ultrasound.

2. Symptomatic patients most commonly experience mild upper abdominal discomfort, which is generally tolerable and not severe.

3. If a polyp is located at the gallbladder neck, it may impede bile drainage from the gallbladder, leading to right upper quadrant pain or colicky discomfort after meals.

4. Patients with coexisting chronic cholecystitis or gallstones may experience more pronounced abdominal pain.

Dietary Considerations for Patients with Gallbladder Polyps

1. Patients should consume ample fresh fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, pineapples, avocados, bitter melon, and spinach.

2. Patients should regularly include foods rich in vitamin A—such as carrots and tomatoes—in their diet, as these may help prevent cholesterol crystal formation.

3. Patients should avoid fried, deep-fried, grilled, smoked, or pickled foods—including preserved vegetables, cured meats, fried skewers, and grilled skewers.
