Introduction
Before applying the ointment, the affected skin area should be rinsed with clean water to prevent bacterial growth and avoid impairing recovery. Physiological factors: Prior to birth, newborns are immersed in amniotic fluid. After delivery, separation from the maternal environment triggers a transient dehydration phase; subsequent exposure to external environmental stimuli causes skin contraction and peeling—this is a normal physiological response and typically requires no specific treatment.

A newborn’s skin is exceptionally delicate. However, shortly after birth, many babies experience gradual skin deterioration—manifesting as dryness and localized peeling—which often causes new parents significant concern about their baby’s health. So, what exactly causes dry, flaky skin in newborns?

How to manage dry, flaky skin in newborns

Dry, flaky skin in newborns may result from physiological (normal developmental) factors—or, less commonly, from pathological (disease-related) causes, such as neonatal eczema. Physiological dryness typically requires no specific treatment, whereas pathological conditions may be managed with topical medications.

Physiological cause: Prior to birth, the baby resides in amniotic fluid. After delivery, the transition from this aqueous intrauterine environment to the external world triggers a transient period of mild dehydration. Exposure to ambient air and environmental stimuli causes the outer layer of the skin to contract and shed—a normal, self-limiting physiological response that generally requires no intervention.

Pathological causes:

Neonatal eczema: This is a relatively common condition, often attributable to suboptimal local skin care—such as excessive washing—or the use of harsh, irritating cleansers or medicated solutions. Clinical signs include skin redness, itching, and inflammation. Under medical guidance, topical treatments such as hydrocortisone butyrate cream or “Yingbao” eczema ointment may be applied.

Before applying any topical medication, gently cleanse the affected area with plain water to minimize the risk of bacterial colonization and support optimal healing.

Newborn skin is extremely fragile; inadequate care can readily lead to eczema or secondary infection. Therefore, meticulous daily care is essential during this period. Specifically, promptly clean the baby’s diaper area after each elimination and replace soiled diapers with clean, dry ones. Additionally, ensure adequate feeding and nutrition. Should any skin abnormalities arise, consult a healthcare professional promptly—do not attempt self-treatment.
