Is garlic effective for treating oral ulcers?
Garlic contains approximately 2% allicin—a naturally occurring medicinal compound with exceptionally potent antibacterial properties. It exhibits marked inhibitory and bactericidal effects against a wide range of pathogenic bacteria, including *Staphylococcus*, *Streptococcus*, and bacteria causing dysentery, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and cholera.

Is Garlic Effective for Treating Oral Ulcers?
Patients with oral ulcers are not advised to use garlic. Oral ulcers involve mucosal defects—varying in size—that expose underlying nerve endings, resulting in significant pain. Any irritant applied to the ulcer surface can readily exacerbate this pain. Therefore, patients with oral ulcers should avoid spicy or otherwise irritating foods—including chili peppers, garlic, ginger, and similar items.
Instead, patients are encouraged to consume abundant fresh vegetables and fruits to replenish vitamins and trace elements. A light, non-irritating diet is recommended, including cooling beverages such as green tea or chrysanthemum tea.
Additionally, patients should maintain regular sleep-wake cycles, abstain from smoking and alcohol, engage in moderate physical activity, and strive for emotional balance—all of which promote faster healing of oral ulcers. Oral ulcers often signal an underlying deficiency in certain vitamins—particularly vitamin B₂ (riboflavin) and vitamin C—and oral vitamin supplementation is therefore recommended to address this deficiency.
