Introduction
Pregnancy tests are relatively accurate, but false-negative and false-positive results can occasionally occur. A pregnancy test is a simple method to determine whether you are pregnant and allows for self-testing by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels in urine. If hCG is present in the urine, the pregnancy test result is positive. If no control or test line appears, replace the test strip and repeat the test.

Female friends often worry about possible pregnancy after their first sexual intercourse and, due to embarrassment, may hesitate to visit a hospital for evaluation. As a result, many opt for home pregnancy tests (urine test strips) to determine whether they are pregnant. But just how accurate are these pregnancy test strips?

How Accurate Are Pregnancy Test Strips?

Pregnancy test strips are generally reliable, but false-negative and false-positive results can occasionally occur. Accuracy depends on performing the test at the appropriate time. If implantation of the fertilized egg occurs relatively late, a negative pregnancy test result does not definitively rule out pregnancy. If your menstrual period is delayed by one week or more beyond its expected date, you may perform a urine pregnancy test using your first-morning urine one week after the missed period.

Pregnancy test strips offer a simple, self-administered method to detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels in urine. A positive result indicates the presence of hCG in the urine—confirming pregnancy. To perform the test, collect urine in a clean container, then immerse the test strip’s absorbent tip into the urine for several seconds. Remove the strip and lay it flat to dry. Read the result within a few minutes. One visible line indicates a negative result (no pregnancy detected at this time); two lines indicate a positive result (pregnancy confirmed). If no lines appear, the test is invalid—discard it and repeat the test with a new strip. While urine pregnancy tests are highly accurate, false positives and false negatives can still occur rarely.

In addition to using pregnancy test strips, you may also seek confirmation at a reputable hospital via transvaginal ultrasound. We hope this information has been helpful to you.
