Introduction
Hibiscus tea has diuretic properties and may easily cause vaginal spotting, potentially affecting normal fetal development; therefore, pregnant women with gestational diabetes should avoid drinking hibiscus tea. In patients with gestational diabetes, poor glycemic control during early pregnancy may lead to complications such as threatened abortion, fetal malformations, or intrauterine fetal demise.

Hibiscus tea is an herbal infusion made from dried hibiscus flowers and belongs to the category of floral teas. It is also known as “Luoshen flower tea,” “Laohuashen,” or “Luo huashen.” This tea is reputed to offer benefits including skin beautification, weight management, and blood pressure reduction—making it especially popular among women. However, it remains unclear whether pregnant women with gestational diabetes may safely consume it. So, can women with gestational diabetes drink hibiscus tea?

Can pregnant women with gestational diabetes drink hibiscus tea?

Hibiscus tea possesses diuretic properties and may trigger vaginal spotting (“show”), potentially compromising normal fetal development. Therefore, women with gestational diabetes should avoid consuming hibiscus tea during pregnancy.

In patients with gestational diabetes, poor glycemic control early in pregnancy increases the risk of threatened miscarriage, fetal congenital anomalies, and intrauterine fetal demise. In late pregnancy, inadequate blood glucose control may lead to organ immaturity in the fetus and excessive fetal growth—often resulting in macrosomia (birth weight exceeding 4,000 g). Macrosomic infants are at higher risk for intrapartum fetal distress (i.e., intrauterine hypoxia) and shoulder dystocia during vaginal delivery. Due to the infant’s large size, vaginal birth poses increased risks for the mother; shoulder dystocia, in turn, may cause clavicular fracture or brachial plexus injury in the newborn—potentially impairing limb function.

Thus, patients diagnosed with elevated blood glucose levels during pregnancy must take this condition seriously and actively cooperate with medical treatment. We hope this article has been helpful to you!
