While moderate consumption of beef jerky is permissible, excessive intake should be avoided, as it may adversely affect maternal health. Therefore, women with gestational diabetes may consume beef jerky in moderation—but portion control is essential.

Elevated blood glucose during pregnancy—gestational hyperglycemia—is one of the most common pregnancy-related conditions. However, it often presents without specific or distinctive symptoms. Some women only discover elevated glucose levels during routine prenatal checkups. In more pronounced cases, symptoms resembling those of classic diabetes may appear—namely, the “three more and one less” triad: excessive thirst (polydipsia), increased appetite (polyphagia), frequent urination (polyuria), and unexplained weight loss. Non-specific manifestations may include: (1) recurrent candidal vaginitis; (2) fetal macrosomia (excessive fetal growth); and (3) unusually rapid maternal weight gain compared to typical pregnancy weight gain. The presence of any of these signs warrants strong suspicion of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Additionally, pregnant women with a family history of diabetes are considered at high risk for developing GDM.
