Fever is an inevitable occurrence in daily life. So, what foods should be avoided when experiencing a fever?

Foods to Avoid During Fever

When the body develops a fever, appetite may decline. Therefore, it is advisable to consume easily digestible foods and avoid raw, cold items—such as chilled beverages, ice pops, and ice cream—as well as overly spicy, stimulating, greasy, or indigestible foods (e.g., black pepper, ginger, garlic, barbecued dishes, and pan-fried pancakes). These foods accelerate metabolism, potentially exacerbating fever and hindering recovery—even delaying resolution of the underlying illness. Additionally, eggs should be avoided during fever, as their high protein content increases metabolic heat production, thereby worsening fever symptoms.

During fever, maintain a light, bland diet and increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Recommended fruits include bananas, apples, kiwifruit, pears, grapes, and pomelos—all rich in various vitamins that help enhance the body’s resistance to disease. Fever increases fluid loss and reduces digestive capacity. Foods with high water content and easy digestibility—such as watermelon, pears, Chinese cabbage, and winter melon—are especially beneficial. Additionally, consuming porridge (e.g., rice congee or mung bean porridge) helps replenish fluids and provides easily absorbed nutrition. However, note that fever often signals an underlying infectious disease; dietary modifications alone cannot control the condition. Blood tests (e.g., complete blood count) and other diagnostic evaluations are essential to identify the cause and guide targeted treatment.

It is also recommended to seek prompt medical attention when experiencing fever. We hope this article has been helpful to you!
