What vegetables can be eaten when uric acid levels are high?
In daily life, hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid levels) is a very common condition, primarily caused by dietary factors. Therefore, patients should consume more vegetables during the course of their condition. So, which vegetables are suitable for individuals with high uric acid?
Vegetables Suitable for Individuals with Hyperuricemia
Patients with elevated uric acid may safely consume vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, leeks, kale, and eggplant. However, they should avoid vegetables with relatively high purine content—including coriander (cilantro), celery, leafy greens (e.g., spinach), and cauliflower—as these may exacerbate hyperuricemia. Additionally, organ meats, hotpot dishes, and soy products should also be avoided. Individuals with hyperuricemia may moderately increase their intake of alkaline vegetables and fruits—such as apples, watermelon, and pears—and may also consume moderate amounts of poultry, including chicken and duck.

Foods to Avoid in Hyperuricemia: • Animal organs—such as liver, lungs, and heart—which contain high levels of purines; • Certain vegetables—including mushrooms, legumes, soy products, and spinach; • Seafood—such as fish, shrimp, crab, and oysters; • Alcoholic beverages—including beer and distilled spirits (e.g., baijiu).

After diagnosis of hyperuricemia, patients must pay close attention to their diet: reduce meat consumption, avoid seafood and soy products, and increase daily fluid intake. Aim to drink at least 2,000 mL of water per day to promote uric acid excretion. During acute gout attacks, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroids may be used to relieve pain and provide symptomatic treatment. We hope this article proves helpful to you!
