Introduction
Nasopharyngitis is classified into acute and chronic forms, with differing symptoms. The symptoms of acute nasopharyngitis closely resemble those of upper respiratory tract infections: initial manifestations may include nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and purulent nasal discharge; patients typically experience pain and a foreign-body sensation in the nasopharynx, along with fever and a burning sensation. Acute nasopharyngitis commonly occurs in children.

Many people are unfamiliar with nasopharyngitis and unaware of its associated symptoms. So, what are the symptoms of nasopharyngitis?

Symptoms of Nasopharyngitis

Nasopharyngitis is classified into acute and chronic forms, each presenting distinct symptoms. Acute nasopharyngitis closely resembles upper respiratory tract infections. Initial symptoms may include nasal congestion, rhinorrhea (runny nose), and purulent nasal discharge. Patients typically experience pain and a foreign-body sensation in the nasopharynx, along with fever and a burning sensation.

Acute nasopharyngitis commonly occurs in children—especially infants and toddlers—and is frequently accompanied by conditions such as adenoid hypertrophy or adenoiditis. Symptoms tend to be relatively severe and may include fever. In contrast, chronic nasopharyngitis is commonly encountered in clinical practice, primarily affecting adults. The most common complaint is a persistent foreign-body sensation in the nasopharynx. Patients often feel as though something is lodged at the back of the nose or throat, accompanied by postnasal drip and an incomplete, unsatisfying cough. When secretions adhere to the nasopharyngeal mucosa, patients frequently attempt to aspirate mucus through the nose—but fail to clear it effectively—leading them to expel it by spitting, sometimes indiscriminately. Additionally, some patients perceive excessive debris or crusts adhering to the nasopharyngeal mucosa, causing discomfort, prompting frequent throat clearing, recurrent dry coughing, nausea, and other distressing symptoms.

Furthermore, individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital and follow their physician’s recommendations for appropriate management. We hope this information has been helpful!
