Introduction
HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone produced during pregnancy. At 5 weeks of gestation, the normal HCG range is 1,000–50,000 IU/L. An HCG level above 2,500 IU/L is generally considered reassuring; levels below this threshold may suggest an increased risk of threatened miscarriage. Blood HCG testing performed 8–10 days after intercourse yields a normal (non-pregnant) value of <10 IU/L; an HCG level ≥10 IU/L is generally diagnostic of pregnancy.

After conception, a woman’s body undergoes a series of physiological changes—such as amenorrhea (missed period), nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, and increased sensitivity to cold—which can help mothers determine whether they are pregnant. So, what is the normal range of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) at 5 weeks of pregnancy?

Normal hCG Reference Range at 5 Weeks of Pregnancy

hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone produced by the placental trophoblast cells. At 5 weeks of gestation, the normal serum hCG level ranges from 1,000 to 50,000 IU/L. Levels above 2,500 IU/L are generally considered consistent with viable intrauterine pregnancy; values below this threshold may suggest an increased risk of threatened miscarriage. Blood hCG testing performed 8–10 days after intercourse yields a normal (non-pregnant) value of <10 IU/L; levels ≥10 IU/L are strongly indicative of pregnancy. At 5 weeks’ gestation, transvaginal ultrasound typically reveals a gestational sac, confirming intrauterine pregnancy. To further assess embryonic development, ultrasound evaluation of fetal heartbeat and yolk sac/fetal pole formation—as well as serial monitoring of serum hCG doubling time—is essential. Suboptimal hCG doubling may warrant investigation for ectopic pregnancy or embryonic developmental arrest.

Following conception, maternal hCG levels rise significantly and are excreted in the urine. Quantitative serum hCG measurement provides valuable insight into embryonic development: rising hCG levels typically indicate healthy progression, whereas declining levels may signal complications. Serum hCG testing requires venipuncture.

However, for most women, gestational age is commonly estimated from the date of last intercourse. We hope this information is helpful!
