Introduction
Radiation is divided into two types: ionizing radiation and electromagnetic radiation. The radiation generated during the operation of a photocopier primarily originates from components such as the exposure lamp beneath the glass platen, the paper exit port, and the fusing lamp. In fact, these lamps are similar to everyday lighting fixtures and emit a certain level of radiation. However, such radiation is present in all electrical appliances and constitutes ionizing radiation.

In general, mobile phones, computers, and similar electronic devices emit a certain level of radiation. However, computers and mobile phones typically cannot print documents, whereas photocopiers are commonly used office appliances. So, do photocopiers emit radiation?

Do Photocopiers Emit Radiation?

Radiation falls into two main categories: ionizing radiation and electromagnetic radiation. During operation, photocopiers primarily generate radiation from components such as the exposure lamp beneath the glass platen, the paper output tray, and the fusing lamp. These lamps are essentially identical to ordinary household lighting fixtures and thus emit a low level of radiation. Such radiation is present in virtually all electrical appliances and constitutes ionizing radiation, which poses minimal risk to human health. Common office equipment—such as printers—also emits trace amounts of radiation.

While operating, photocopiers generate ozone inside the machine due to electrostatic effects. Ozone is a highly reactive oxidizing agent. At a distance of 0.5 meters from the photocopier, ozone concentration may reach 0.12 mg/L. This ozone forms when high-voltage components within the photocopier react chemically with ambient air. Due to its strong oxidative properties, ozone can convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen oxides, causing significant irritation to the human respiratory tract. In fact, ozone exposure—not radiation—is the primary health concern associated with photocopier use.

In summary, pregnant individuals should minimize their use of such devices. When necessary, they may consider wearing radiation-shielding garments. Wishing you good health and a joyful life!
