Side Effects of Notoginseng
Potential side effects of Panax notoginseng (Sanqi) may include allergic reactions, “excess heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept), and indigestion. Sanqi is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation, resolving blood stasis, reducing inflammation, and relieving pain. Although widely used, it may produce adverse effects, as detailed below:
1. Allergic reactions: Some individuals may develop hypersensitivity to Sanqi, typically due to an allergic response to one or more of its constituents. Symptoms may include skin rashes, pruritus (itching), and eruption of skin lesions, potentially leading to significant cutaneous damage.
2. “Excess heat”: Sanqi is classified as a warm- or hot-natured herb in traditional Chinese medicine. Prolonged use or use by certain susceptible individuals may lead to symptoms associated with “excess heat,” such as dry mouth and throat, sore throat, five-center heat (a sensation of heat in the palms, soles, and chest), and tidal fever.
3. Indigestion: Sanqi may cause gastrointestinal discomfort in some individuals, manifesting as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. These symptoms may be related to excessive dosage. Therefore, patients must strictly adhere to their physician’s instructions regarding dosage and administration and must never self-medicate.
