Introduction
Causes of drooling during sleep include both physiological and pathological factors. Drooling is common in patients with gingivitis or oral ulcers, as saliva production increases due to oral disease, leading to drooling while asleep. Additionally, sleeping in the prone position lowers the mouth’s position, which may contribute to drooling; adjusting sleep posture can help alleviate this symptom. Neurological conditions—such as cerebral infarction, intracerebral hemorrhage, and intracranial tumors—may also cause drooling during sleep.

Most people have probably experienced dozing off at a desk, only to wake up with drool on the table. Many individuals who nap while lying face-down notice that they drool during sleep. For adults, this can be particularly embarrassing and may negatively affect one’s personal image. So, what causes drooling during sleep?

  Causes of Drooling During Sleep

Drooling during sleep may stem from either physiological or pathological factors. When sleeping face-down, the mouth is positioned lower than the rest of the head, making it easier for saliva to leak out; adjusting one’s sleeping posture accordingly can often alleviate this issue. This phenomenon is especially common among patients with gingivitis or oral ulcers. Oral diseases may stimulate increased salivary secretion, leading to drooling during sleep. Neurological conditions—such as cerebral infarction, intracerebral hemorrhage, or intracranial tumors—can also cause drooling. Lesions in these cases may compress neural structures within the brainstem or central nervous system, impairing facial nerve function. If patients experience such symptoms, prompt medical evaluation and accurate diagnosis are essential, followed by timely, targeted treatment.

Drooling during sleep is also frequently observed in individuals with spleen deficiency (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine). In addition to drooling, these patients often display tooth-marked indentations along the edges of the tongue, a sensation of oral stickiness, and irregular bowel movements. Treatment recommendations include herbal formulas such as *Renshen Jianpi Wan* (Ginseng Spleen-Strengthening Pills) or *Shenling Baizhu San* (Ginseng-Poria-Atractylodes Powder) to tonify the spleen and regulate digestion. During pharmacological treatment, patients should maintain a balanced, nutritious diet and avoid greasy or heavy foods. Foods beneficial for spleen health—including walnuts, hazelnuts, and other dried nuts—may be incorporated into the daily diet.

Patients are advised to quit smoking and alcohol consumption, avoid overeating or binge eating, and maintain a positive, stable emotional state. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
