What is the normal platelet count?
Disease description:
I frequently develop bruises on my skin after even minor contact. Blood tests revealed that my platelet count is low, making me prone to bleeding. Could you please tell me the normal platelet count range?
In healthy adults, the normal platelet count ranges from 100 to 300 × 10⁹/L. However, because laboratory equipment varies among hospitals, some institutions may report slightly higher reference ranges—typically 125 to 325 × 10⁹/L. If a routine physical examination reveals a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) accompanied by clinical symptoms, prompt medical evaluation and treatment are strongly recommended. Platelets play a critical role in hemostasis; a significantly reduced count increases the risk of spontaneous or excessive bleeding, which can be life-threatening.
