Is urticaria contagious to others?
Disease description:
I have many red bumps on my back, and my friend said it’s urticaria. Could you please tell me whether urticaria is contagious to others?
Urticaria is not contagious. It is a relatively common allergic skin disorder, commonly known as “hives” or “nettle rash.” Lesions may appear as linear, plaque-like, or punctate eruptions and typically resolve spontaneously within 2 to 24 hours. Oral antihistamines such as levocetirizine tablets may be used to control allergic symptoms, and calamine lotion can be applied topically to relieve itching. Avoid spicy, greasy foods and potential allergens—including pollen, milk, eggs, and cold air. Only diseases caused by pathogenic organisms are truly infectious. Although infections may trigger urticaria, they act merely as precipitating factors; the clinical manifestations of urticaria result from a systemic immune response induced by the infection—not from direct transmission of the pathogen itself.
