The distinction between body odor and bromhidrosis (fox odor) lies in two aspects: First, the odors differ. Bromhidrosis commonly produces a strong, unpleasant, pungent smell—particularly under the armpits—whereas general body odor is milder and typically described as sour or sweaty; this odor usually disappears after bathing. Second, the underlying causes differ. Bromhidrosis results primarily from excessive secretion by the apocrine glands in the axillae, leading to a distinctive odor that often requires medical treatment (e.g., topical or systemic medications) or surgical intervention. In contrast, general body odor typically arises from sweating in warm or hot environments and generally does not require specific medical treatment.
