Ruminating or having disorganized, intrusive thoughts is not necessarily indicative of depression; however, individuals with depression may experience symptoms such as heightened sensitivity, excessive suspicion, and ruminative thinking. Under the influence of negative emotions, some people may uncontrollably dwell on painful past experiences, engage in ruminative thinking, and develop pessimistic, hopeless thoughts. In contrast, depression is clinically characterized primarily by a marked and persistent low mood. Patients commonly exhibit depressed mood, low self-esteem, and feelings of worthlessness; some may even develop suicidal ideation, or—less commonly—psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions.
