Is it safe for gout patients to eat mushrooms?
Disease description:
I’ve been enjoying mushrooms a lot lately, but today I had a gout flare-up. I’m worried that eating mushrooms might be harmful to my health, so I’d like to ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat mushrooms?
Patients with gout may consume mushrooms in moderation. A low-purine diet is recommended, with strict limitations on intake of animal offal, seafood, and meats—particularly beef, lamb, and pork. Increased consumption of fresh vegetables and fruits is encouraged. Mushrooms are acceptable for gout patients, as they are not considered high-purine foods. Additionally, patients should drink plenty of water daily to maintain a urine output of 2,000–3,000 mL, thereby promoting uric acid excretion.
