How to Differentiate Between Eczema and Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot) on the Feet
Disease description:
Recently, I’ve experienced itching and fissures on my feet. I’m unsure whether this is eczema or athlete’s foot (tinea pedis). How can one distinguish between eczema and athlete’s foot on the feet?
The distinction between eczema and tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) lies in their clinical presentations. Eczema on the feet typically manifests as small, localized red patches, sometimes accompanied by oozing and intense pruritus—these are common early signs of eczema. In contrast, tinea pedis is a fungal infection with various clinical subtypes: some present with interdigital maceration, fissuring, and pruritus; others feature scaling, cracking, and oozing; while certain cases may show only dry, scaly, or cracked skin on the feet without any pruritus. When experiencing any discomfort or abnormal symptoms on the feet, prompt medical evaluation at a hospital is recommended.
