What is tinea manuum and tinea pedis?
Disease description:
My boyfriend has a lot of ringworm on his hands and feet—I’m not sure what it is. The doctor diagnosed it as tinea manuum and tinea pedis. What does “tinea manuum and tinea pedis” mean?
Tinea manuum (hand dermatophytosis) refers to dermatophyte infection affecting the skin of the hands and feet, excluding the dorsal surfaces. Tinea pedis (foot dermatophytosis), particularly interdigital tinea pedis, is an extremely common fungal skin infection. Topical antifungal therapy is the first-line treatment; commonly used imidazole agents include bifonazole, miconazole, clotrimazole, and ketoconazole. For hyperkeratotic tinea manuum or severe interdigital tinea pedis—conditions often associated with poor adherence to topical therapy—systemic antifungal agents may be prescribed.
