Swollen lymph nodes are typically evaluated by a general surgeon, but they may also be assessed by a hematologist or oncologist. In most cases, lymph node enlargement is caused by lymphadenitis—a bacterial infection of the lymph nodes—characterized by tender, enlarged lymph nodes, and sometimes erythema (redness) overlying the affected nodes. Severe inflammation may lead to systemic symptoms such as fever. Treatment usually involves oral antibiotics, such as cefradine or cefixime. We hope this information is helpful.
