Intermittent sharp pain from the lower abdomen to the anus is likely caused by proctitis. The rectum connects directly to the anus; bacterial invasion or ingestion of unhygienic food can trigger intestinal inflammation. Inflammatory stimulation of the rectal mucosa leads to spasm of the surrounding rectal tissues, resulting in intermittent sharp pain. Currently, for lower abdominal and anal pain caused by proctitis, oral anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medications are recommended for treatment.
