Redness, swelling, and pain in the skin adjacent to the fingernail may be caused by paronychia or by a bacterial infection triggered by trauma. In the case of paronychia, it often results from cutting the nails too short, which irritates the surrounding tissue and leads to inflammation. If it is a bacterial infection, it may occur when a wound near the nail becomes contaminated by contact with unclean objects, allowing bacteria to enter and cause inflammation.
