Causes of Nabothian Cysts in the Cervix
Disease description:
Recently, I’ve frequently experienced a sensation of heaviness and pain in the lower abdomen, and I’ve also noticed changes in my vaginal discharge. I went to the hospital for an examination, and the doctor diagnosed me with a Nabothian cyst. I’d like to ask: What causes Nabothian cysts on the cervix?
This condition is generally associated with factors such as inflammation, hormonal fluctuations, and cervicitis. In patients with certain gynecological disorders, chronic inflammatory stimulation may lead to hyperplasia of the periglandular tissue and subsequent scar formation, which compresses the glandular ducts—resulting in the development of cervical nabothian cysts. These cysts are typically small, asymptomatic, and do not interfere with normal daily life; therefore, no specific treatment is required. However, regular cervical cancer screening—namely, liquid-based cytology (TCT) and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing—is essential. If both tests yield negative results, repeat screening is recommended in 3–5 years.
