What Causes Tonsillar Hypertrophy?
Disease description:
I haven’t been eating spicy foods regularly, but recently I’ve had a sore throat. After seeing a doctor, I was diagnosed with tonsillar hypertrophy. Could you please explain what causes tonsillar hypertrophy?
Tonsillar hypertrophy is caused by pharyngeal inflammation. When the secretory glandular tissue becomes congested—severely so or even inflamed—an acute inflammatory response occurs, resulting in excessive nasal secretions. Anti-inflammatory treatment is required. Options include penicillin, cephalosporin antibiotics, or nebulization therapy. If conservative treatment proves ineffective, bilateral tonsillectomy may be considered.
