Can iron deficiency anemia cause muscle cramps?
Disease description:
I'm five months pregnant and often experience leg cramps at night, along with occasional dizziness and nausea. Can iron deficiency anemia cause muscle cramps?
Iron deficiency anemia generally does not cause muscle cramps. Muscle cramps are not a symptom of iron deficiency anemia. Cramps are usually a clinical manifestation of hypocalcemia; therefore, for patients experiencing cramps, electrolyte levels—especially blood calcium—should be checked. If cramps are caused by hypocalcemia, calcium supplementation is required to relieve the condition.
