What impact does iron deficiency anemia have on the heart?
Disease description:
I've had iron deficiency anemia for many years, and recently I've been experiencing palpitations from time to time, which seems to be affecting my heart. I would like to know what impact iron deficiency anemia can have on the heart.
Long-term iron deficiency anemia can impair cardiac function. Anemia tends to cause increased heart rate in patients, and sometimes leads to accelerated constriction of the heart's blood vessels, triggering symptoms such as palpitations. Anemia easily induces myocardial hypoxia; chronic anemia may result in insufficient blood supply to the heart or lead to anemic heart disease. In anemic patients, reduced red blood cell count and decreased hemoglobin levels cause ischemia and hypoxia in tissues and organs. To maintain adequate blood supply to various organs, the heart compensates by increasing heart rate and cardiac output. This overloads organs, leading to myocardial hypertrophy, cardiac enlargement, reduced contractility, and in severe cases, heart failure.
