Peptic Ulcer and Iron Deficiency Anemia
Disease description:
Is there a connection between peptic ulcer and iron deficiency anemia, if a family member has peptic ulcer and is also diagnosed with anemia?
Iron deficiency anemia is associated with gastric mucosal atrophy, reduced gastric acid secretion, and impaired iron absorption and transport. Some patients infected with Helicobacter pylori produce substantial amounts of iron-consuming substances, thereby increasing iron demand. Patients with gastrointestinal ulcers often suffer from poor appetite and low food intake, making them prone to iron deficiency and subsequently developing iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia can be improved by taking oral medications that protect the gastric mucosa.
