How large do colorectal polyps generally need to be before they become cancerous?
Disease description:
After my examination today, the doctor said my colon polyp is relatively large and needs timely treatment. I would like to know how big colon polyps generally need to be before they become cancerous?
Colon polyps generally have the potential to become cancerous when they grow larger than 2 centimeters in diameter. If a patient's colon polyp exceeds 2 centimeters, there is a significant risk of malignancy. Moreover, since the patient's colon polyp is located in the sigmoid colon—a site where most polyps in adults are typically adenomatous—there is added concern. Adenomatous polyps can potentially develop into cancer. Even though the probability of cancer may be low, it is best to remove the polyp during a colonoscopy.
