Paronychia can be self-treated, usually by applying topical ointments. For acute paronychia, prompt and effective management is necessary to prevent damage to the nail bed. Broad-spectrum antibiotics with good antimicrobial coverage, such as amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, may be used. If there is no improvement within 48 hours, surgical intervention is required. If necessary, antibiotic therapy may be selected for treatment.
