Can hypokalemia cause left ventricular enlargement?
Disease description:
I've been feeling some discomfort in my chest recently, and I have hypokalemia, so I'm a bit worried. Can hypokalemia cause left ventricular enlargement?
Hypokalemia can lead to left ventricular enlargement. It may also cause symptoms such as abdominal distension, paralytic ileus, irregular respiration, and abnormal heart rate; therefore, dietary potassium intake must be increased. Consequently, hypokalemia easily triggers cardiovascular diseases, resulting in arrhythmias and cardiac conduction block. In severe cases, it may even lead to cardiac enlargement. Hence, active potassium supplementation and treatment targeting the underlying cause are still necessary.
